How to Extend the Life of Your Water Heater

Water heater

If you’re like most Austin homeowners, you don’t think much about your water heater after you purchase it, at least until it stops working. At that point, you suddenly start thinking about it a lot! Instead of putting yourself in this position, though, it’s a good idea to think about your water heater once a year or so. Some simple maintenance can keep your hot water heater running well for a long time

  • Flush the water heater. Turn off the water to your heater and drain out several gallons into a bucket. If the water is dirty or has debris in it, keep flushing until this is gone. Sediment can damage the water heater tank and removing it can help keep your water heater running well.
  • Check for leakage. Look for puddles under your water heater as well as water on the hoses that attach to it or on the heater itself. Check the gas lines for corrosion, too, because a gas leak can be hazardous to your health.
  • Look at the anode rod. This metal rod is designed to attract corrosion inside your water heater tank so the tank itself is undamaged. If it gets fully corroded, replace it to protect your water heater.
